What are eyelash extensions, and how do they work?
Lash extensions are individual synthetic or natural fibers that are tapered at top to mimic the look of real eyelashes. These lashes are applied to your natural lashes one-by-one using a special adhesive to create a customized look that suits your eye shape and personal style. The process gives you the look of longer, fuller, and darker lashes, and is totally painless!
What is the difference between classic, hybrid, and volume eyelash extensions?
Classic lashes are a 1:1 application (one extension on one natural lash) of thicker extensions, and are like an enhanced mascara look. Volume extensions involve attaching a fan made of multiple, thinner extensions to each natural lash. This can range from light to heavy, and be dense or fluffy. Hybrid extensions is a mix of classic and volume lashes which creates a pretty and textured look. Each style can be customized by length, curl, and overall shape of the set.
Are eyelash extensions customizable to my desired look?
The best thing about individual eyelash extensions is just how customizable they are! That being said, we're working with your natural lashes as our structural base, so what is possible depends how on many natural lashes you have, the curl of your lashes, are they tilted up or down, and if they are thick or thin. We will work with you to determine the best length, curl, and shape to suit your eye shape and personal style. Looks range from a natural, subtle look to a dramatic, full look.
How long does the application process take?
The application process can take anywhere from 1-2.5 hours, depending on the lash style and if we're doing a fill or a full set. Some technicians work faster than others, but beware lash salons and artists with a suspiciously quick service time. This is detailed work, and if the service is rushed that can mean major (possibly irreversible) damage to your natural lashes.
How long do eyelash extensions typically last?
Eyelash extensions can last anywhere from 4-6 weeks, depending on your natural lash growth cycle, the aftercare routine you follow, and your lifestyle. Regular touch-ups are recommended to maintain the fullness and look of your lash extensions.
How often will I need to come in for fills?
Most clients come in for touch-ups every 2-3 weeks to maintain the look of their lashes. The time between fills can vary depending on your natural lash growth cycle, aftercare routine, and lifestyle. Lash extensions fall off either on their own when the glue gives out, or with your natural lash when it naturally sheds in the final phase of the growth cycle. The new lashes that grow in and the naked guys who lost their extension will need to be filled. In most cases, lashes can be filled in perpetuity.
Sometimes a fill might not be possible. If the existing extensions are too grown out, we may recommend a removal and full set. Or if there is too much makeup or other buildup on the lash line. In this situation, we really can't get a good deep clean with the extensions in the way, and may recommend that they come off so we can clean up your lash line and keep your eyes happy and healthy! While we try our best to accommodate clients who come in with lashes from another salon (a foreign fill) we can't promise anything. If the lashes weren't applied properly, we may recommend a removal.
Is it safe to get eyelash extensions if I have sensitive eyes?
It depends! There is a difference between sensitive eyes and potential allergies. It's really important to inform your lash artist about any allergies or sensitivities you may have, or think you might have. We can navigate sensitivities by using a sensitive glue formula, or a different type of lash tape, but you should also expect some extra aftercare instructions.
If you think you might have an allergy, we recommend coming in for a patch test to ensure that you don't have an adverse reaction to the product. Unfortunately, allergies to the adhesive used in lash extension application can develop over time, and in most cases it means you are no longer a good candidate for lashes.
Can I wear mascara or other eye makeup with my eyelash extensions?
You definitely can still wear mascara or other eye makeup with your eyelash extensions, but we don't really recommend it. Mascara and other makeup can build up on your lash line and break down the lash glue, causing your extensions to fall out more quickly. (This build up can also put your eye health in jeopardy!) It can also clump the lashes together, making them look messy, and cause any volume fans to close which could ruin the look you were going for. If you do wear eye makeup, it's a good idea to use a water-based or oil-free formula and wash your lashes thoroughly afterward.
Can I swim or shower with eyelash extensions?
Yes, you can swim and shower with eyelash extensions, but it's important to avoid getting them wet for the first 24-48 hours after the application. After that, you can swim and shower as usual, (you don't have to wait two days to shower, just be careful and turn the temp down. Steam is not your friend.) but it's recommended to avoid rubbing or pulling on your lashes. Lashes should be washed with lash shampoo and rinsed immediately after getting out of any body of water and allowed to air dry.
How do I take care of my eyelash extensions?
Great question! Lashes are an investment, and proper aftercare is required, not just recommended. To take care of your eyelash extensions, avoid rubbing or pulling on them, avoid oil-based products that will break down the glue more quickly, use a lash brush to keep them separated and untangled, and avoid sleeping on your face. Lashes need to be washed daily with a lash safe cleanser to remove any dirt or debris from your lashes and keep your eyes happy and healthy!
